Forget the Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, the Seychelles and the Maldives! Discover a land far from mass tourism: Sao Tome, one of the smallest countries in Africa.
The largely undiscovered island of Sao Tome provides tropical jungles with wondrous exotic birds, trees and flowers, remote golden beaches, lush rainforests and volcanic mountains offer breathtaking scenery for a holiday that goes beyond the usual. The rugged landscapes of Sao Tome island lie on an alignment of non-active volcanoes, 250km (155 miles) off the coast of West Africa.
The islands of Sao Tome and Principe offer the visitor an unusual wealth of (endemic) nature and animals. The beaches, ocean and coral reefs are unspoiled.
For divers the sighting of large fish, rays and sea turtles is guaranteed. Four species of turtles are known to visit the waters around Sao Tome & Principe from September to March. Snorkelers will also have a great time.
The bird life is one of the natural wonders of Sao Tome: out of the 55 species here, 15 occur only in this place in the world and thus are some of the rarest birds in the world. The claim of the unusual wealth of the nature on Sao Tome is not just ‘a talk’. Of the 700 local plant types, about 100 of these are only found on Sao Tome and Principe. The jungle of Sao Tome was therefore classified by the "International Scientific Association" as one of the two most important jungles of this type in Africa due to its plant variety.
Sao Tome is an island of microclimates; at any time of year you’re likely to find areas of cloudy and rainy skies and areas of sun. From March to May, though, the daily rains generally yield to blue skies and hot temperatures for beach goers, while trekkers might prefer the cool, dry air and cloudy skies from June to September.
