Wild South São Tomé

From Omali Lodge Luxury Hotel, head to the southern tip of São Tomé island, where the road ends and adventure begins. After a stop for coffee at the Roça São João, we shall head to Malanza, a small village near to São Tomé’s largest mangrove area, protected by the Obô National Park. Here, local fishermen will take us on their traditional dug out canoes into the mangrove to discover its peculiar biodiversity. We shall then have lunch at the community-run Jalé Ecolodge and visit the beautiful Roça Porto Alegre and its breathtaking views on the Iogo-Iogo bay. On our way back, we shall stop to take a swim at one of the most secret beaches.

East Coast São Tomé

From Omali Lodge Luxury Hotel our first stop is the Roça Agua Izê, a working cocoa plantation, with its colonial buildings and warehouses. We shall then continue along the coast, passing typical fishermen villages and admiring some of the best views of the island. Roça São João is our final destination, where we shall relax and enjoy São Tomé’s best-kept culinary secrets for lunch. Famous cook and artist João Carlos Silva welcomes us to visit the plantation and colourful guesthouse, an eclectic blend of modern art, colonial patrimony and rural Santomean craftwork. On our way back to the capital, we shall stop for a swim in any of the numerous secluded beaches found on the East Coast.

Fishing village & island tour "Abade & Belo Monte"

This trip takes you to the eastern side of Príncipe following the coast past a typical fishing village with its dugout canoes, hundreds of dried flying fish do you mean ‘racks of flying fish being drying out’? and treehouse on our way to the Roça of Abade. From there you can enjoy spectacular views of the magnificent Jockey’s Cap where it rises out of the ocean to a height of 305 metres, a couple of kilometres off the coast. You then retrace your steps past Santo Antonio to the Roça of Belo Monte and the sight of hundreds of cocoa and banana trees growing on the hillsides. Here you will also be able to take in the beautiful view over Praia Banana with Ilheu Bom Bom in the background

Sundi and St. Joaquim

Sundi was once the home of the Portuguese royal family. Only by visiting this roça can you come to understand how self-sufficient such colonial farms once were. Sundi boasts a very large hospital, a church, a very big workshop, some stables, coffee- and cocoa-roasting facilities, an enormous mansion, the sleeping quarters for hundreds of labourers, a railway network with steam locomotive and various other outbuildings. This is also the site where Sir Arthur Eddington managed to prove Einstein’s theory of relativity during a total eclipse in 1919. From here we then drive south through the forest to St. Joaquim where you can witness the making of palm oil by local farmers in the age-old tradition.

Safaris by Quad

On Príncipe, at Bom Bom Island Resort we use quad bikes as mere tools for experiencing nature in a more adventurous way. All quad bike excursions are guided and stick to designated trails. Utility quads are used to ensure the minimum environmental impact. A short introductory course is available for beginners.

Praia Companje

Following the pass from Bom Bom to the top at Santa Rita, we turn off onto the little track to Praia Companje. On the way there we visit the farm of Cascalheira where cacao, coffee, vanilla and various other fruits are farmed. Here you will also see one of the biggest Oka trees on Príncipe. At Praia Companje you visit the beautiful little fishing village and see dugout canoes in the making, fishing nets being repaired, the small church and one of the fishermen’s houses, before enjoying a taste of some fresh coconut and salted flying fish. We then retrace our steps back to Bom Bom.
