Loango LodgeAfrica’s Last Eden – that is how the ecologist and conservationist Mike Fay referred to Loango National Park in 1997 when he walked 3000 km along the forest corridor between Congo and Gabon to shine a global spotlight on Africa’s most pristine rainforests and the need to protect them. For in the primeval surroundings here surely we can see what much of the world’s natural environment must have been like before it was touched by the hand of man. Where else on earth can you step straight from dense rainforest onto a beach nearly 100-km long with only crabs, buffalos and elephants for company? Loango National Park is one of the 12 national parks created in 2002 by Gabon’s President Omar Bongo Ondimba. This coastline park encompasses some 1,550 square kilometres of land and is famous for its variety of unspoiled landscapes. Not to forget its most interesting inhabitants such as western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants and buffalos. Amidst these fascinating surroundings, we offer you the small but exclusive Loango Lodge with uninterrupted views of the wide tranquil river that separates the lodge area and the national park. A perfect combination of comfort ...Loango Lodge is the perfect base from which to launch expeditions into different areas and camps such as Pte. Ste. Cathérine Beach Camp, Tassi Savannah Camp, Akaka Bush Camp and Evengué Lodge. The lodge is the ideal spot to prepare for the explorations ahead or recover from the adventures enjoyed. Breakfast may be taken in the restaurant or on your own private terrace overlooking the river and national park. In the rainy season from November to April, buffalos and elephants can sometimes be seen passing by in the park while you’re enjoying an early breakfast! … exclusive experience of raw nature …In Loango National Park, we have created a circuit that allows you to see and experience all the park’s highlights and ecosystems. The starting point for most visitors is Evengué Island. From there, you can travel to Loango Lodge and the other camps. From the lodge, you can venture out into the forest with one of our eco-guides or go on a cultural walk to the nearby village. Offshore, whales and dolphins can sometimes be spotted swimming playfully from mid-July to mid-September. … and conservation …Loango Lodge is where “Operation Loango” was initiated in 2001. The lodge is still the main base for numerous science programmes coordinated by the WCS, WWF and the Max Planck Institute. Ape, dwarf crocodile, forest elephant, western lowland gorilla, marine turtle and whale research is conducted here, as well as educational projects, cleaning of beaches, park management and illegal trawler control. More than 70 students are enrolled in the local village’s well equipped school, built and run by Africa’s Eden. A C T I V I T I E S
