Fish species Details Technique
Atlantic Blue Marlin Known for its size, stamina and speed, this is the offshore world's most sought-after fish and large numbers of medium size (rats) to truly massive blues seasonally visit Bom Bom’s waters. Their average weight in peak season can be an astonishing 500 lb, and several granders (1000 lb plus) have been fought, caught and released here. Double and triple headers are not uncommon and the fishing grounds are as close as it gets anywhere. Normal practice is to troll a spread of marlin artificial lures on 80-lb bent butt Penn International outfits. Bait and Switch is also popular amongst more experienced anglers.

Sailfish – Atlantic Known as being one of the world’s best big Atlantic sailfish destinations and having 6 world records to its credit, Bom Bom offers excellent fishing for Peixe Andala (as it is locally known). Although sailfish average about 80 lb in these waters, it is common to catch 100-lb-plus fish and the resort's record (which was not IGFA claimed) stands at 149.87 lb, A good average number of strikes (often simultaneously) provides great fun on both conventional and fly fishing gear. A spread of skirted ballyhoo on 30#lb tackle is normally used when conventionally targeting sailfish. Hookless ballyhoo or strip baits and other teasers are used when fly-fishing.
Yellowfin Tuna Frequently found in massive schools, yellowfin tuna can provide fast action with frequent full house strikes. Sizes in these waters can vary from football size to occasionally massive fish in excess of 100 lb and the resort record stands at 212 lb. Yellowfin tuna are caught with a diversity of trolling methods, from feathers to plugs and ballyhoo rigs. The larger specimens have mostly come as a by-catch on fast trolled large marlin lures.
Wahoo Locally known as “peixe fumo” (smokin’ fish) for its lightning bursts of speed, this is a commonly caught fish in these waters and averages 35 lb, although fish weighing up to 70 lb do show up. A very aggressive predator that takes most offerings. It is commonly caught when game fishing with rapala type plugs, on sailfish rigs and with fast trolled marlin lures.
Dorado Bom Bom offers tiny 5-lb to massive 50-lb-plus bulls of this breathtakingly colourful fish that takes to the air when hooked. Known for their fast growth and short lifecycle, these can be as ferocious and aggressive as any fish and caught by various methods. The biggest bulls are normally caught on marlin lures during the Gravana season.
Sharks Mako sharks are sometimes caught when targeting marlin, and hammerheads also make regular appearances during the Gravana season. Blue and bull sharks have also been seen.
Inshore species, such as:
Great barracuda a prolific species that is regularly caught year round and in massive sizes up to 65 lb.
Cubera snapper a tough, hard fighter that can be commonly caught all year. Fish up to 65 lb have been caught on rod and reel but bigger specimens are known to patrol these waters. Aggressive fish that produce good results when trolling, live baiting or spinning.
Other species: Gorean snapper (Lutjanus Goreensis), Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorous Maculctus), Guinean barracuda (Sphyraena Afra), Greater amberjack (Seriola Dumerili), Horse-eye jack (Caranx Latus), African pompano (Alectis Ciliaris), Rainbow runner (Elagatis Bipinnulata), Yellowfin king fish
